What is a geosite?

Geosite is the abbreviation for "site of geological interest". It is a locality, area or part of a territory whose geological and geomorphological characteristics have scientific and landscape value and it is therefore possible to define an interest for conservation.

Being the geosites non-renewable and unreproducible once lost they will be forever. For this reason they can be considered as an invaluable asset to be preserved, known and valued.

Furthermore the establishment of a geosite contributes to maintaining the integrity of the ecosystems and consequently contrasts the loss of biodiversity.
